I got that secret Google challenge that they previously used for recruiting. I used ChatGPT to come up with the solutions to all the answers (you have to make working python code). ChatGPT was able to answer all the questions, but had some difficulty at the end. The last problem you still had to know how to conceptualize it properly, so it required that understanding of what was going on so as to phrase it properly to ChatGPT. It still really struggled with it.

I gave an interviewee one day to come up with a solution to a problem
He came back with a verbatim copy-paste from one of these sites, except he tried to obfuscate it by running find-replace over a couple of key words
I found out it was an exact copy because his submission had the same trailing whitespace characters
My boss at the time still hired him. Worst mistake ever

"Great video! It really underscores the complexity of technical interviews and the potential for misuse. While some may consider 'leaked questions' as learning, I believe a more effective and ethical method would be to prepare thoroughly. For anyone struggling, my AI interview coaching app "Baited" might be a useful tool. It offers guidance and aids in optimizing algorithms, without any hints of cheating. Keep up the great content!"

I think the unfair nature of coding interviews is because the software development industry is too saturated. So you need some arbitrary way of cutting down the number of applicants. You can complain about people being lazy or not being willing to take the time to assess the interviewers potential on a deeper level; but it simply wouldn't be feasible to spend that much time assessing each candidate.

@kayboy6055
March 20, 2025 at 12:10 pm
I feel like the biggest problem is poor people wanting to compete for more money instead of knowing what's actually at stake.
Even in the comments the problem is less about finding solutions to man made problems like optimizing algorithms, but there'll be some make-believe gate keeper trying to attach random things to the point of AI as a solution to technical problems.
Even if you used AI to produce a solution, the solution was always to produce at a lower costs. I don't get why people think this about winners or losers, youre all losers.
@mellywood
March 20, 2025 at 12:10 pm
Programmers may be really smart in some aspects but their common sense is still the one of bullied nerds. Yes, the job may be easy in comparison to the interview, but it may not be at times and reputation is too a great quality, they can easily replace you, so give them a reason to not do by being hundred times better than the actual job

A serious recruiter is interested in the thoughtful process that leads to the final result, not in the solution itself. So if he does not try to find out if the candidate knows what he is doing, than it is his own fault, not the one of a candidate. At the end, when we implement the actual features at work, we use StackOverflow etc. so we don't reinvent the wheel in our jobs anyway.
@ColdPotato

I have always used something like a gradual deep dive to ask questions about something the candidate has worked on or claims to have good expertise in. e.g. Start with what the product was doing and then keep getting deeper to components, classes, functions, optimizations, libraries, and then the algorithms used by libraries and their minutiae if it is warranted, like say they encountered a particularly nasty bug in a library – I want to know how they found it and how they fixed it or defensively patched it or whatever, and then the algorithmic complexity involved in such real contexts. I mostly do not want to know if they can solve random publicly available code puzzles.
