Where Are Laid Off Tech Employees Going? | CNBC Marathon
CNBC explores challenges currently facing U.S. tech workers, including mass layoffs, widespread cuts in company budgets, and threats of deportation for H-1B visa holders.
“The layoffs to the start of 2024 signal a dramatic shift in the tech industry,” said Jeff Shulman, professor at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business. The number of tech sector layoffs in 2024 has been outpacing the number of terminations in 2023. So far, about 42,324 tech employees were let go in 2024, according to
Layoffs.fyi, which tracks layoffs in the tech industry.
While layoffs have put stress on the workforce, a booming artificial intelligence market is giving the industry a renewed sense of optimism. Generative AI startup deals announced or finalized in the first quarter of this year totaled more than $12 billion compared to about $4.5 billion invested in the space last year, according to PitchBook.
On July 16, 2023, Canada opened visa applications for a pilot program that would allow up to 10,000 H-1B visa holders in the United States to apply for a three-year open-work permit in Canada. H-1B holders are highly educated and specialized foreign workers that work in fields such as tech. After massive layoffs in the tech industry, this was a lifeline for H-1B holders who needed to find a new job or face deportation.

I researched the visa process and requirements. Most of the steps is restrictive to some degree. Land of the free, not so. With all the visa steps, restriction, requirements is like a maze at the end your in a trap. So no wonder there are many migrants without proper documents.
The visa process is equally difficult whether entering or exiting any boarders. Research visa to Mexico close by, and Africa Diaspora visa conditions. Any many ways it is hindering human progress, and is like legal enslavement. Becoming a citizen of Mexico four million USD. seem like extortion tactics all dressed up with make up.
Even after meeting and paying for a visa, there is no guarantee you will be allowed into another border.

North Indian immigrants are importing India's caste, religious hatred, caste hatred and discriminating and harassing IT workers in America. All top financial institutions and Mutual fund companies these north indians became SVP , VP and Direcctor positions and doing all sort of discriminations. DOL is not taking any actions on these culprits, These mutual funds companies are mostly private and enjoy the wealth created by these harassers. North Indian's are destroying america and DOL labour must investigate all these mutual fund companies where large number of North indians occupying Managerial positions.

Software engineers will have to become cloud engineers, people management and data analysis. AI models still has some glitches in it but it's really really good. What the media makes it sought out to be is damaging to what's actually happening. Some software engineers and other non-technical workers at these companies are ghost employees anyway. So it's good for the company and not for those employees.

Being laided off they can for apply for unemploymetn compensation until the yfind another job, once the being to recieve it the ywill receive it bi-weekly, The Unelployment Compensation is not a full Check like their former job but half their former job.

There was a lot of do nothing employees who got let go it was easy to spot them especially when they showed you a day in the life videos where you literally saw them just send off pointless e mails and attend pointless team meetings well done you showed the higher ups how useless you really are.

my mom got me a tech job by putting in a good word for me and the company responded by hiring me and then laying off my mother and giving me her job, and then two years later they laid me off too.
Now i work at a burger stand!
Remember guys, this is the best economic system ever devised! There's no other way we could possibly do things! This is just the most efficient allocation of resources we can achieve!

Tech is done now as AI being implemented. If the new generation is smart, they'll go into trades which AI can never replace. Everyone needs their housing, plumbing, electrician, HVAC, etc. fixed and they NEED to pay it as to a corporate job you're expendable at any cost. Tradesman are the ones that are coasting with everything that's been going on with politics, society issues, social economics at the end of the day they're the ones that will always have a job.
Back in the 90s they removed home economics and tech ed from the general curriculum pushing computer tech classes as they said it will be the future, in just 25 years later AI is being implemented meanwhile even though people are laid off they need something fixed. AI in the next 25 years, will program itself, world needs plenty of helpdesk people

Skills are a forever learning and changing thing. Never get comfortable, always diversify and never be scared of change. These companies are looking for skills not college degrees. I haven’t had a tech job ask for my degree yet, but I’ve been asked how to create, build and problem solve. I must have read 50 AI, IOT, and cloud certifications books in the past year and just recently my company switch me to AI projects; not knowing this was coming down the pipeline. I don’t want to see anyone lose their way of living but o hope this helps!!

A video producer is not tech he works at a tech place not as a tech technician That's why they laid him off he was not essential to technology anybody can hold a camera and video edit tag means you know how to read binary understand hacking viruses and AI things of this nature 💯🤦🏻♂️
