CES 2019: Tech trends to watch for at the consumer electronics show

With more than 4,400 exhibiting companies and more than 2.7 million square feet of exhibition hall, CES is overwhelming. Here’s what to expect from the upcoming show, from A.I. and self-driving cars to 5G networks and 8K televisions.

See all the top CES announcements here: https://www.digitaltrends.com/news/tech-trends-ces-2019/

Tech shapes our daily life, impacting not just how we read and work and play but how we interact, how we learn, how we grow. And just days from now in Las Vegas, CES (formerly the Consumer Electronics Show) will give us a window into what that will look like.

Unfortunately, it’s a really big window.

With more than 4,400 exhibiting companies and more than 2.7 million square feet of exhibition hall, it’s hard to glimpse tomorrow; that window is plastered in banner ads for Alexa, new televisions, and more iPhone cases than you can shake a fanboy at. Let me do the work for you. I’ve read the 687 emails I received in the last three weeks and synthesized all the announcements from LG, Samsung, Sony, Qualcomm, and everyone else. Here’s my list of the large trends that we’ll see in 2019, to help you make sense of the wonderful, mesmerizing chaos that is CES 2019.

You can’t have a CES without some crazy new display technology, whether that’s a giant TV screen that rolls-up like the posters from your college dorm room or an 8K set with so many pixels you’ll want to pop the news anchor’s zits yourself. Ahead of this year’s show, we’ve been panting like a dog during summer over rumored announcements about smartphones that either roll up or simply fold in half to better fit your pocket. With Samsung, LG, and Huawei all doing the “will they, won’t they” dance, it’s hard to say for sure whether we’ll see one. My guess? Abso-freaking-lutely. And as usual, Samsung will lead the innovation charge.

Yes, there will be voice-powered devices at CES. Yes, there will be smart speakers running Alexa, and yes, Google Home will be embedded in TVs and lightbulbs and other things. But A.I. goes well beyond simply telling you what to wear.

t’s been hard to miss brands shouting about their efforts to bring 5G networks to the world over the past few years. With substantially faster speeds and vastly lower latency times, the next-generation networking technology will interconnect everything from cars to computers to smart homes. Like the Internet back in 1999, this will change everything.

8k is irrelevant, as a matter of fact smart TV's will be obsolete in the not to distant future. There are no current CPU's or GPU's that are strong enough to run a game at 8k res. In fact as far I know there aren't any 8k games out there, so what's the point? 4K VR headsets like the "Pimax 5K Plus or 8K" with extreme wide field viewing are the future. If consumer reviews are positive about the Pimax VR headset later this year I'll be getting one myself. ^^

When technology outgrows the market needs…

  9. @TNTsundar

    March 29, 2025 at 10:42 am

It’s ironic that we see the quality difference between 4K and 8K through a smartphone display that is capable of less than or equal to Full HD resolution.

  10. @Sky.Lukewalker

    March 29, 2025 at 10:42 am

    I don't care about 8k unless it's in a VR headset

When is AMD going on scene?

  17. @turkhi

    March 29, 2025 at 10:42 am

The person who came up with the design idea of that hideous foldable phone should've be immediately terminated for lack of professionalism!!!
Jeez If they would've asked me my customer's opinion before making a fool out of themselves by showcasing that piece of crap on stage I would've told them that for a foldable display doesn't make any sense if it is less convenient or thicker than a sheet of paper and Samsung foldable smartphone looks like a freaking a brick or something….

  18. @VikCero

    March 29, 2025 at 10:42 am

Do you hear yourself? How can you make exciting tech sound boring?

  19. @dzynguy

    March 29, 2025 at 10:42 am

4k hasnt even taken off, 4k blurays of old flicks are, like $40 ! and it's already obsolete, with 8k now. 8k blurays will clock in at, what, $100? lol. 8k before 4k has even made a dent. ridiculous. and i predict the death of things like googles and amazons homepods, etc. we all know, all they do is spy on conversations in the home without your consent, etc. autonomous cars are a waste. every death right now puts a co. close to bankruptcy from being sued. they are a waste, and will cause nothing but headaches. i would much rather they spent time innovating on ways to make tech cheaper, and lighter, and better, and faster instead of "new" for the sake of it. i would much rather prefer a 4k bluray for $15, than already releasing 8k which,as far as i am aware, we couldnt even perceive the difference in our homes anyway. bit pointless imho.

  20. @ZachNasty

    March 29, 2025 at 10:42 am

8k is pointless lol I know eventually it will be better available but it seems to soon,. 4k is barely available

    March 29, 2025 at 10:42 am

What's wrong with a large TV on a wall? TV serve as a gadget and furniture, and you don't buy a furniture to hide it "smart guys"

  25. @coryryker3305

    March 29, 2025 at 10:42 am

The rollup OLED has been tested for 3 years. It's old news by now.
An 8K TV has been out since last year. 5G won't be exciting for another year or two. Get with the program.
