I don't think they put thermostats at all in these cheap things, they are likely just potentiometers.
@KobraSalvage
March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
I'm a little upset you said "you don't need to know what PTC means" as its 100% part of this video! the positive thermal coefficient of a ceramic heater is part of its safety mechanisms!! it reaches max resistance at about 140 degrees celsius and at that point is only capable of drawing about 100w or so, I know because a gutted ceramic space heater is what I use to heat my 3d printing enclosure for EXACTLY that reason. EDIT: i've taken a lot of space heaters apart in my life, that switch being FULL ON when you set it to max is almost industry standard lol. fair warning to anyone playing with these
@Celeviii

I love your videos always incredible information research is always well done. Please keep this up for many more years to come!
@cadmium-ores
March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
I can NEVER get those little thermostat dials to work. I'd tried variations on "wait until desired temperature is reached, then turn it until the device switches off/on" but it just… does not come back on/turn back off reliably. I eventually gave up. 🙁

March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
I wonder if some of the "fire hazard" image came from the Kaprun tragedy, where one of these torched a funicular inside a mountain. Yes, the space-heater was the cause of the fire (and smoke) that got a ton of people killed, but it was also a space heater with half its casing removed installed in (effectively) a train car because at the time a funicular didn't count as a train.
@MariusNinjai

Can I use hot air gun as a heater 🤔

March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
They are safe. We have on of these in the bathroom. But one word of caution: dont use aerosols like deodorant or room fragrance sprays while in an enclosed room with the heater on unless you want to be at risk to have an explosion.

As a European electrician, with confidence I can tell that Making your own extension cord is safer then buying a ready one. Considering most single components are better quality then a complete extension cord or powerstrip
@jlrebor2626
March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
seems like you definition of cheap differs vastly from mine, as i disassembled mine to clean it not long ago and was lacking any tipe of fancy equipment as the one in the vid, as a matter of fact, you can turn it on fully open, i did this as a pesky noise showed up, i was defeated by it, so every time i turn it on i have to move it around until it stops, thank lord it doesnt have the tip over swich
@Axiom125

@SadisticSenpai61
March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
Well, yeah, you should always know what outlet is on what circuit. Wait, do ppl not test their circuits every year? Dad always picked a Saturday in the summer to test the circuits and map what outlet/light was on which circuit and make sure everything was working properly. It was me and my brother's job to run around and take note of what turned off/on whenever he flipped a circuit.
I assumed my landlord has it all mapped out? He's certainly got labels on the circuit box downstairs that imply he's done that legwork. Although he doesn't test it every year like my dad did.
@SadisticSenpai61
March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
Yeah, I've got two outlets in my bedroom where the top plugin doesn't hold a power plug anymore – as in they just fall out of the socket. It's not usually an issue cuz I rarely need to plug anything in on that side. But yeah, I should probably replace them. Well, I should have the landlord replace them – but I need to clean up the spaces first so he can actually get to them. lol
@Calligraphybooster

Very pleased to be on 230V. (And metric👊🙂)
@rhaedas9085
March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
One thing not mentioned in the video nor in the comments – if the heater has been sitting or stored for a while, check as best you can for dust or other stuff on the heating elements, and keep an eye on it as it first heats. A little dust will burn off quickly and not be a problem, and it's the first sign of colder months when you smell that smell turning on the big house heater. But who knows what else might have gotten on there while the heater was sitting there? Spider webs, insects or other remains, or maybe even something oily or plastic that got dripped on it. The safety devices should still step in if there's a problem, but like anything else do a quick examination before using something that hasn't been recently used.
@mothwaltz4163

I use such a heater and loved the explaination on how it works. Also love your sense of humor. Keep up these friendly, educational and fascinating videos! Subbed!
@tosvus
March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
How do the wall mounted panel heaters work and compare in safety? They usually don't have a fan either, and often are permanently mounted and used. Some countries/areas rely solely on them.
@willr88
March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
I think there may be another safety "switch." @ 11:55 the image reveals a 105 number on some heat shrink tubing. Is this just a number found on the side of the tubing? Maybe. Is it a temperture rating in degrees F? Please open the tubing, and see if there is a temperature fuse underneath. My dehydrator incorporates one of these devices and there are rated by a turn off temperature. Maybe this has one. They are not resettable, and could be this heater's last defense, and possibly not discovered or covered in the video.

1) Plug directly into wall. 2)nothing within 2 feet of heater. 3) Don’t disable tip over switch.
@starcrashr

I use those cheap heaters with heavy duty smart outlets to digitally control them together. This way is much cheaper than a smart heater.

March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
16:55 Is the heating element electrically insulated? It looks pretty shiny to me. If it's not, a foreign object need not be flammable itself, just sufficiently conductive.
@JonBrase

A coworker used to keep a space heater by his desk, and one day I arrived at work and found happy little char marks on the receptacle.
@charliesretrocomputing
March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
My 2nd home (built in the 70s or 80s I think?) has a receptacle/outlet/plug so worn out that plugs literally fall out 😭

This exact heater was advertised as the cheapest first listing on the warehouse NZ, in my country. I always avoid these heaters and recently bought a simple ceramic one for $89 even though it was a bit more expensive.
@zohan90210
March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
as great as safety features are, the best is is not putting them to the to the test
@bl8388
March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
Any time you have a space heater always make sure its' plugged all the way in (you could barely touch the plug at the end of the heater without it burning your hand) because it wasn't plugged in all the way.
Feel how hot the plug is after putting it on full heat for at least 20 minutes. If it feels hot to the touch, and it's plugged all the way in, make a note and only use it at a lower heat setting.
Best not to use it when you sleep at night.
@19murkigurki95
March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
In this video you showed why these devices are quite safe and when used correctly they’re not a fire hazard. However in the case of the rope way tunnel disaster in Kaprun, Austria in 2000, one of these things caused the death of 155 people.
Although the space heater isn’t meant for use in vehicles, one was installed into a train without its cover to heat the train conductor’s cabin. Over the years fibers of insulation material mixed with hydraulic oil leaking out of pipes nearby settled near to and on the heating wires. Eventually the mixture caught fire and the flames quickly spread across the train, locking the people on board inside the train inside the tunnel.
So yeah these things might be safe, but only if you use them correctly.
@RamadaArtist
March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
25:28 I love how you put a caution sticker on the heater simply to cover the whole thing up with the blanket.
Edit: Sheesh, and it needed that warning too. The ignition temperature of cotton can be as low as 230°C. You almost managed to light that blanket on fire, (or an equivalent one made out of cotton,) with just that one test.
Edit 2: Ah, I see now that you didn't put the sticker on, but rather that the sticker came off.
@kokodin5895
March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
i find one thing anoying about most of those heater fans. at least the ones sold in my country
thermostats regulates if it works but not what is working. i would like to have thermostat behind the main switch and only connected to the heating coils so fan could spin all the time and circulate air more evenly
@gordonhensley432
March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
I sell heaters in a big box retail store. Been doing so for 30 years. Your informative videos are exactly what I explain to my customers about heater safety. On a related note, we sometimes get indoor-rated propane heaters returned to the store because the customer states "The burner keeps shutting off. It's defective." What they are experiencing is the activation of the low oxygen sensor shut off system. I wish that I could put a sticker on each heater with your channel info on it.
@nobodynogroup
March 13, 2025 at 2:47 pm
What I've learned:
– electric heater safe to leave unattended despite myths to the contrary
– jbweld the little copper thing to prevent my heater from randomly turning off
– keep the faceplate removed for easy repair
– tape the little foot on the bottom down so that I can use my heater from any angle
– use a space heater to test if the wires in my wall are healthy
– unplug space heater and quickly touch the socket to check for heat and determine if receptical is loose (easy to diy if this is the case)
– splice a shorter cord for a more efficient and safer space heater
– a few space heaters = 1 heat pump
– can plug in multiple heaters to one receptical as long as they aren't on high setting
– could remove fan of fan forced heater with foot hack and turn it on its back to have a silent heater

Lived in an apartment with no central heating, made do with space heaters in winter. I was paranoid abt them catching fire and ended up only using them when i was home, then turning them off for work and sleep. Pro tip- an electric blanket is invaluable in this situation, its much cheaper than trying to heat the whole room so that your bed is a reasonable temperature instead of a slab of ice you cant sleep on.

American wiring is really scary. The wires are just running loose in the walls, without electrical safety pipes and junctions. Pipes have been required in sweden since 1950.. they were how ever lead at that time..
